The primary objective of the working group Materials Simulation is the modeling of microstructures and properties. The complex development of the microstructures determines the process to be used and the mechanical-technological properties of the semi-finished products and components. Integrated microstructure-based modeling of processes and process chains is applied for the prediction of precipitations and microstructure evolution. Models based on thermodynamic-kinetic and thermomechanical approaches are used for the quantitative correlations of microstructure and mechanical properties. Modeling is becoming increasingly more important to systematically design alloys and processes. Both physical and phenomenological approaches are used alone and in combination.
