Steel and Violins

A commemorative plaque embossed in silver

On October 7th, 2022, a commemoration ceremony on the subject of 30 years of development of ESP technology took place in Cremona, the hometown of the violin-making families Stradivari, Amati, Guarneri. ESP stands for Endless Strip Processing and refers to a combined casting and rolling process that starts with a thin slab and produces endless strips with a thickness of less than 1 mm through continuous hot rolling. The IEHK was involved in this successful technology development with currently more than 10 systems worldwide with a feasibility study and experimental investigations. For a commemoration, the owner of the Cremona-based steel manufacturer Finarvedi, Cav. Giovanni Arvedi , invited the authors of the feasibility study Prof. Rudolf Kawalla (IMF at the TUBA Freiberg), Prof. Wolfgang Bleck (IEHK) and Prof. Pleschiutschnigg (adjunct professor at the IEHK) along with other companions. To commemorate the joint development work, a plaque was embossed in the shape of a violin bottom, but made of silver rather than wood or steel.
